Art of effectiveness in practice. GESSEL deploys Harvey AI.

Technology alone does not make an organisation work better. Its value becomes clear when it genuinely improves day-to-day work and allows a team’s time, knowledge and expertise to be used more effectively. With this approach, GESSEL is deploying Harvey across all of its practices, integrating AI solutions into its operating model and putting its Art of effectiveness philosophy into practice.

Reviewing large volumes of documents, conducting research, comparing materials and preparing first drafts are all essential parts of legal work. But they are not always where the time of the most experienced lawyers is best spent.

GESSEL is deploying Harvey to change that balance.

AI is intended to allow lawyers to focus primarily on the areas where their knowledge, experience and professional judgment create the greatest value. At GESSEL, this means making even better use of the team’s deep legal expertise, one of the foundations of the firm’s position in the market.

“Technology in itself is not a strategy. An organisation can have access to the most advanced tools and still work exactly as it did before. For us, value begins when technology allows us to genuinely rethink the way work is organised and devote more attention to what our clients value us for most. This is how we understand Art of effectiveness, and why we see the deployment of Harvey as part of the evolution of our operating model rather than as a standalone technology project,” says Marcin Macieszczak, Managing Partner at GESSEL.

Deploying Harvey across all practices will make its capabilities available regardless of specialisation and support collaboration on complex matters involving lawyers from different areas of expertise. At the same time, technology is intended to streamline those elements of legal work where it can genuinely improve efficiency, without shifting responsibility for professional judgment and recommendations away from the lawyer.

“This deployment opens up far more than the possibility of completing individual tasks faster. The most interesting part will be redesigning entire ways of working: identifying where AI can eliminate unnecessary steps, make collaboration easier or help lawyers reach the substantive analysis stage more efficiently. We will continue this process. Technology is developing extremely quickly, and our task is to consistently translate its capabilities into tangible value for our teams and our clients,” adds Michał Bochowicz, Partner at GESSEL.

“What stands out about GESSEL is that efficiency is not something the firm is trying to introduce through technology, as it is already deeply embedded in how the organisation works. When you look at the volume and complexity of M&A transactions the team handles in Poland, it is easy to understand why making the best possible use of lawyers’ time and expertise matters so much. Harvey is a natural fit for that approach, and we are proud to support GESSEL as it takes it further,” comments Jorge Bestard, Vice President of EMEA Sales at Harvey.

GESSEL will continue to develop the use of technology both in the delivery of legal services and in its own internal processes. The direction remains the same, technology should enhance the capabilities of lawyers and enable the firm to put its Art of effectiveness philosophy into practice even more effectively.
