The first hearing on climate lawsuits!

11.05.2022 News

Last Wednesday, the first hearing regarding climate lawsuits took place in front of the District Court in Łomża, which we filed against the State Treasury together with the foundation ClientEarth.

The purpose of the lawsuits is to establish liability for actions and omissions that contribute to dangerous and irreversible climate changes that harm the personal rights of victims. The victims for whom the lawsuits have been brought are five Poles who feel the effects of the ongoing climate crisis and demand effective action from the public authorities.

The trial in Łomża was not easy, but we hope for a favorable outcome.

Małgorzata Górska, testifying at yesterday’s hearing, for many years associated with the Biebrza National Park, feels climate change on many levels. As she says herself:
“The state has failed in the matter of climate protection, but it is I who bear the costs. I’m afraid of flooding. This is a real threat that affects the security of my home and the functioning of my small business.”

Ms. Małgorzata is not the only person affected by the effects of global warming – only by joint efforts, among others, with the use of available legal actions, can we stop the progressing climate crisis.
