1 January marks the unofficial holiday of Public Domain Day. Cultural institutions the world over take this as an opportunity for propagating knowledge about copyright, with especial emphasis on free circulation of artistic creations.

Incidentally, 1 January of every year brings the passing into the public domain of new works, such as paintings by art history legends, with the effect that these works may now be cited and used without legal restrictions, even for commercial purposes…
