Dr Monika Bychowska specializes in Polish and EU competition law and consumer law. Her experience covers cases involving competition-inhibiting agreements, abuse of dominant market position, merger control, and interactions between business enterprises and competition authorities. She has worked on highly complex matters, including systemic and cross-border cases, in both regulated and private markets. Between 1998 and 2009, she was associated with the Polish Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK), including serving as Director of the Competition Protection Department from 2005 to 2009.

BIO

Dr Monika Bychowska is an attorney-at-law and a Senior Associate in the Competition and consumer law team at GESSEL. She advises on matters related to Polish and EU competition law and consumer law, with a focus on supporting businesses operating in both private and regulated markets, in particular in cases concerning competition-inhibiting agreements, abuse of dominant market position, merger control, and dealings with competition authorities. She has extensive experience in handling highly complex matters, also ones with a cross-border dimension.

Her professional experience includes conducting and supervising antitrust proceedings and cooperating with competition authorities at both national and EU levels. Between 1998 and 2009, she worked at the Polish Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, also in the leadership roles of Deputy Director of the Legal and European Jurisprudence Department and Director of the Competition Protection Department. Her responsibilities included overseeing merger control processes, combating anti-competitive practices, and cooperating with the European Commission and with competition authorities of EU Member States within the European Competition Network.

She is the author or co-author of numerous academic publications, including the Commentary on the Act on Competition and Consumer Protection. An experienced academic lecturer – she taught at the Warsaw School of Management, where she also served as faculty dean, and at the Faculty of Law and Administration of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw.

Monika completed a master’s degree in legal studies at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, moving on to a PhD in law in European Union law. Admitted to practice as an attorney-at-law in 2014. She is fluent in English.
